Spreading the Dripping Springs Way

We baked with a friend over the holidays and she was using fair trade sugar.  This is the brown crystal sugar that you see at many restaurants if you aren't familiar with it.  It isn't as refined as white sugar and can be used in any recipe just like white sugar.  Best of all, it's made by people who are paid a fair wage.  We had been buying charming hand-made products and coffee that are fair trade, but now we are thinking about everything we purchase.  We just ran across a site that is owned by ebay -- WorldOfGood.com.  World of Good sells eco-friendly products made by artisans all over the world -- the site ensures that the products are made by people who are paid fairly for their products.  Empowering talented people and conserving our valuable resources seems very Dripping Springs to us.  For cool things about Dripping Springs, Texas, please visit http://www.drippingspringslife.com/.

Brighton Beach Comes to Dripping Springs

I guessit is Fine Arts Season -- the fall play for the DSHS theatre department opens next month.  From Mrs. Koske's press release:  The Dripping Springs High School Theatre Department is bringing Brooklyn to the Hill Country with its production of Brighton Beach Memoirs, Neil Simon’s hilarious, semi-autobiographical play! This will be the inaugural production in the Black Box Studio Theatre at the new high school campus.  The coming-of-age comedy premiered on Broadway in 1983 and made a Tony-winner of star Matthew Broderick.  It was followed by a popular film version in 1986 (starring Blythe Danner and Jonathan Silverman). Dripping Springs Theatre is excited to be performing this modern classic in the intimate Studio Theatre. This will be something a little different for Dripping Springs audiences, who have not had a small theatre venue in town. This play is intended for teen and adult audiences. There is discussion of sexuality and mild language in this performance. Due to the limited audience seating in the Studio Theatre, patrons are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at the DSHS Main Office (920 Hwy. 290 W, Dripping Springs, TX, 78620). Ticket sales will begin on October 18, 2010. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students in advance. At the door ALL tickets are $10.00. Performances will begin at 7:30pm on November 4, 5, 6, 11, and 12. A Matinee performance will begin at 2:00pm on November 7. The Black Box Studio Theatre is located in the Fine Arts Building, room F206.

Local Talent Amy Nichols has a Lead Role in Zach's Delightful Drowsy Chaperone

We took a little trip into Austin last night to visit one of our beloved treasures -- the Zachary Scott Theatre.  The Drowsy Chaperone, billed as a musical within a comedy, played to a full house and one of Dripping Springs' talents -- Amy Nichols -- was a lead.  I can't say enough good things about the show.  The costumes, music and dancing were all superb.  Chaperone is directed by Nick Demos who just one a 2010 Tony as producer of Broadway's Memphis.  Don't miss it!  The play runs through August 29th.  For more information about cool things happening in and around Dripping Springs, Texas, please visit http://www.drippingspringslife.com/.

Founders Day Festival Memories

It was another great Founders Day Festival in Dripping Springs this past weekend.  It always amazes me to see how many creative and talented friends we have who are participating in all areas of this famous old DS event.  Many we knew were smoking anything with legs in the cook-off contest -- not to mention burning our lips with incredible and unusual homemade salsas.  Several of our pals were showing hand-crafted jewelry and art in the vendor area.  Over on the stage, I was thrilled to see so many of my friends who are tremendous musicians performing for the crowd.  I don't think you could live anywhere else and be blessed with such talent:  Lonnie Atkinson, Jim Halfpenny, Ron White, Ragan Altizer, Nathan Thrash and Martin Aker of Edison Chair -- check them out, they're going to be big!  Martin's parent's Deborah and Roger kept us all rocking with their magical classic hits and John Rogers fiddled away with the headline group Saturday night.  Stay tuned to DrippingSpringsLife.com for more on this great music.
